Estes Park

There's no more fitting segue from the relatively flat Front Range to the soaring Colorado Rocky Mountains than Estes Park — entering the quaint town is like being embraced by the Rockies.
Definitely drive up Fall River Road, which is a one-way maintained road that offers an 11-mile drive up to the top; then you drive back down to Estes via Trailridge Road. It's scenic, but not scary and in forest most of the way. We have traveled to Rocky Mountain National Park for 30+ years and we never tire of this drive. There is a brochure you can pick up near the beginning of the drive; it's keyed to the drive up and will tell you historical facts and explain how the road was built long ago by convicts.
